I’ve been comparing my last few races this week (in my mind) and mentally trying to figure out what was different between Sarasota and my other two races. It’s not like racing every 2-3 weeks really gives you chance to “train.” I know I have been close to that sub-2 mark for about 3 months now and it makes me think — what did I do different?
What I did differently – The day before – I ate a protein/carb full breakfast, leftover jambalaya (with bulger) for lunch, and bread, pasta, salad, and chicken and skipped any kind of alcohol the night before. The morning of I ate a banana (THANK YOU TIFFANY!) and a Clif Bar. During the race I ate some Honey Stinger Chews (in Cherry Blossom) at mile 4.5 and mile 6.5. I took a Gu (strawberry/banana — actually not too bad) at mile 8 and then another Gu (orange) at mile 11. This is the most “fuel” I’ve taken in during a race. As for water, I carried a bottle. I drank about half of it and tossed it around mile 9 or 10. I only stopped at one station after that to drink Gatorade. I think adding the banana to my breakfast, and adding an extra Gu at mile 11 really helped kick things up a notch. Carrying a water bottle also helped immensely. If I was going to do anything different I would have done half water/half powerade (or something like that).
What I did differently – Last week I ran 10 miles on Sunday, 7 miles on Tuesday, and 3.5 miles on Thursday. I did nothing Friday OR Saturday (I’m such a slacker!). For all of my prior races I ran Friday (and for Gasparilla I did the 5K the day before). I’m thinking that running on fresh legs was a bonus.
What I did differently – I downloaded a bunch of new music! Music always motivates me — here’s what I bought …
The previously mentioned song from Glee – Landslide
Both of Britney’s new songs – Hold it Against Me and Till the World Ends (gotta admit, I LOVE Till the World Ends)
Runaway Baby by Bruno Mars — This was first post by Danielle @ And I Ran…and I fell in love! Such a great running song.
ET –Even though I HATE Kate Perry — I listened to her new song and couldn’t resist (featuring Kanye). Damn it’s good.
Back Seat — by New Boyz Featuring Dev and the Cataracts. Awesome running beat.
What the Hell – Avril Lavigne – I really wanted to hate this song, but wow did it grow on me!
I Don’t Wanna Care Right Now– Lupe Fiasco
Add all of these to your iPod STAT!!
So was it really all that different? Not really. Did the little things make a difference? DEFINITELY. I think along with PRing, I learned A LOT from this race. It wasn’t by luck or by chance that I kicked ass. No, I put my dominoes in the right order and then let go. I know I’m not the fastest runner and I have A LOT of room for improvement, but I have to admit I’m pretty freakin’ excited about reaching my goal. Do I have a new goal? Maybe. (OK, of course I do) My new focus is definitely the full marathon…but I do have some fun things coming up.
First up… I registered for both the really long named 10k + 2 (Distance Dare!) that’s going on in Winter Park on March 26th. It’s my first time running “alone” in that Paula will be out of town. *sob*
And then…I know Paula will be very happy because I went ahead and registered for this little race on April 10th.
It’s the last one of the season y’all!
Off to convince my hubby to stop yelling at the Orlando Magic. How many times can I tell him that they can’t hear him?
