It’s a parental rite of passage…
Dessert or no dessert? Tough question.
Growing up dessert was frequent – especially as I entered my teen years. It might not have been offered every night, but I don’t remember ever being denied if I wanted it. Unless of course I didn’t all of my dinner. No dinner = no dessert. But let’s be honest, that’s wasn’t a problem. I loved to eat. Still do.
Somewhere between my teens years and now dessert changed. I became more interested in spending my calories elsewhere…
and I just stopped associating finishing dinner with eating sweets. Truthfully, if I indulge it’s rarely at night. I’m more of a day desserter (this totally explains my Jeremiah’s addiction).
But now that I have kids dessert comes back into the picture, and truthfully, yields a lot of power if I want it to. But do I?
One thing I know for sure – I believe in dessert. I think kids should be allowed to eat sugar – IN MODERATION. I feel like when you restrict and prohibit it turns into a problem later in life. Besides, life is meant to be enjoyed. Dessert is pure enjoyment. Of course the same can be said for not teaching kids the importance of moderation. Obesity is a problem for a million reasons. Lack of moderation is just one. It’s a thin line.
What I’m truthfully worried about is associating finishing dinner with eating dessert. I am trying not to play the “you need to finish dinner” card because I think it can lead to overeating. This is easier said than done though. Dinner is all a big game with toddlers and kindergartners and it is a game I fail at, often. While B & L don’t get offered dessert every night – when they want it they DO have to eat. That’s a given. However, the focus is on “bites” and sometimes dessert is apples. It depends on what I have! So far this has worked for my family – although I don’t expect it to work forever. The one thing about kids is they LOVE to keep you on your toes.
It did work tonight though – B ate his whole meal, L ate bites of her Brussel sprout and most of her chicken. Chocolate was enjoyed by both.
I also ate all of my dinner… and I’m sipping on my beer (and thinking, “Damn where did that camera battery charger GO?”).
What’s your dessert stance? How often do you eat dessert?
