I went to bed last night at midnight. There was no good reason for this. Yes, I went to a Central Florida Lady Bloggers meetup with this lady…
but I was home by 10. That’s not excuse.
Still, my brain was awake and then I had a 4:50 wakeup call so I could go to spin class. Awesome.
So of course today, I was asking myself WHY in the WORLD do I work out in the morning?
Ok, so I *might* have stayed up late on Monday night too (finishing The Secret Keeper — which was REALLY GOOD – review to come!) and skipped my usual workout on Tuesday. So, despite logic, I somehow convinced my brain that skipping spin really wasn’t an option. In fact, I woke up exactly 2 minutes before my alarm went off. I hate it when that happens.
I rolled out of bed, got dressed, and drank a half a cup of coffee before driving up to the gym. I got there at 5:28 (the gym opens at 5:30)and I was #9 on the spin sign up list — 9 out of 15! WTH early risers! I thought people slacked this time of the year? I somehow managed to wakeup during the class and then by the end I was on this insane high.
It felt really good to sweat today — so happy to start my day with a clear head and energized body! {tweet brought to you by endorphins}

Oh yeah. THAT’S why I workout.
The “spinning high” seriously lasted until about 2pm when my body decided that it was exhausted. Kinda what you get when you sleep for less than 5 hours, huh. Eh, it happens. {Don’t worry, though — I just got my second wind. Evil second wind.}
I could make a million excuses for not getting up. I could promise myself I would go to the gym after work — but for what? and hour and a half of extra sleep? Then I forfeit half the time I have with my kids (which, face it- is never enough time as it is!). And dinner is late. And then I’m wired until midnight again. Yeah, that’s just not worth it.
So really this is a reminder to myself… The next time YOU question why you’re waking up at the ass-crack of dawn to burn some energy and rev up some endorphins– just remember you never regret a workout. But YOU do regret having to shift your (my) life around. And I definitely don’t regret being able to spend the night sitting on the couch and not getting up once the kids are in bed. <–because yes, that’s what I’m doing right now.
So it may be crazy, and it may be freaking early – but it’s always worth it. Well, pretty much always.
What’s your story? Morning, noon, or night?
Noon or night for me. Every time I try to make myself work out in the morning (at least on the weekdays), i end up getting super tired around 11am. I am sure it’s just a mental thing, but I’ve come to terms with the fact that I am just not a morning worker-outer.
I think noon would be the perfect time of day to workout! I wish my office had showers. I would definitely feel more inclined to squeeze in a workout then.
I need to be better at working out in the mornings. I notice I have a better day when I workout in the mornings. My problem is, I don’t sleep well. I have insomnia really bad. When the 4:30 a.m. alarm goes off, I think about going to workout and then I figure I’d better get sleep instead and go back to sleep. I’m going to try & get up early the rest of the days this week though & get my workout in. We’ll see how that goes.
It’s just so damn hard sometimes! I’ve compromised and only make myself do it twice a week (right now). I am a night owl (and I’ve actually been having bouts of insomnia lately) so I feel you on the not sleeping well!
I used to be really super awesome at waking up at the crack of dawn. And now I’m just out of habit. Maybe I’ll get my groove thing back at it once the ol’ leg heals.
It really is a habit. I would never wake up early on my own. Unless maybe there was money involved!
I will do just about anything for extra sleep! I can sometimes manage 2 or 3 days a month of early mornings but otherwise its evening workouts for me. I’ve never ever been good at mornings though. My mom even swears that by 4 months old I was sleeping through the night until 9am every day!! So I say I come by it naturally. Maybe I’ll be lucky enough to end up with late sleeping kids too???
I only make myself wake up super early twice a week — so it’s not THAT bad, but normally I do love to sleep in. I am SUCH a night owl it’s ridiculous.
Both of my kids are great sleepers – but they go to bed early, wake up early. I can’t decide if this is a good thing or not. Ha ha.
Oh man, I LOVE waking up 2 min before the alarm. I’d much rather wake up naturally than be jolted awake by Gangham Style.
I hate it when I miss like 5 minutes of sleep. LOL. I prefer to be woken up suddenly. Maybe I’ll have Jimmy Fallon wake me up tomorrow morning for old times/race sake 🙂
Morning workouts are tough, but they are the best! I hate going through the workday thinking “I have to run/workout when I leave here.” So much more exciting to think “I can go home and do whatever I want when I leave here.” Except “doing whatever I want” really means cooking and laundry…but whatever. haha
I’m exactly the same way. I’ll myself in the morning that I’ll want to work out at night – but then when it rolls around I am SO unmotivated.
LOL to doing what you want. But at least you have OPTIONS after work – that’s what’s important!!
