Move Monday: Not Your Mama’s Walking Workout

March 4, 2013 by Michelle 15 Comments

Did you know that it’s ridiculously hard for a runner to “just walk”? Yeah, I bet you don’t find that surprising.

Every time I get on the treadmill, even though I despise the treadmill, I just want to jack the speed up to 7.0 and go. But, you know that’s pretty much impossible right now (although, I don’t get how I have absolutely NO issues doing jumping jacks and butt kicks! Can someone explain?).

Instead, as I’ve mentioned, I’ve resorted to walking. Sure I could pick another cardio activity (like the elliptical…zzzzz), but I find that my walking workout actually CAN get my heart rate as much as jogging and spinning does (in a very healthy, pregnancy-friendly way). It’s kind of a pregnancy miracle that took me 3 times to figure out. Third time is a charm! Here’s the workout:

Walking Workout

Seems pretty simple, right? Well, I can’t lie it is! Ha. But, it’s worth trying out if you aren’t able to run, but are still looking for a good endorphin high!

As a bonus here are some songs I am jamming out to right now. A mix of new and old (of course!):

  • I Love It – Icona Pop (feat. Charli XCX)
  • Young Forever – Jay-Z (feat. Mr. Hudson)
  • Bootylicious – Destiny’s Child
  • My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark – Fall Out Boy
  • California (OC Theme Song) – Phantom Planet
  • Little Talks – Of Monsters and Men
  • Seven Nation Army – The White Stripes
  • Head Like a Hole – Nine Inch Nails

What’s getting you moving this week? What are you jamming out to lately?? Can you “just” walk on the treadmill? Or does running call to you too? I swear the treadmill mocks me.

I definitely can’t just get on the treadmill and walk either! While I think I’d fall off at 7mph, I could do 6 🙂

      It’s hard!

Lol to falling off at 7. That will be me when I start up again 🙂 It took me a while to get to 7!

That looks like a great treadmill workout…I may print it out and take it with me the next time I go to the gym.

Try it and let me know! It makes my thighs and butt burn in a way that running doesn’t.

Next time I can’t run because of shin splints or whatnot, I’m totally going to try this. I have a hard time just walking on the treadmill. There is just something about running that calls to me.

Yes, exactly — it’s just MOCKING me so I show it but ramping up the incline. Lol! It’s definitely worth trying if your injured and works out my thighs like no other cardio workout does!

I’m so into that Fall Out Boy song! Phantom Planet, on the other hand, makes me want to poke my eyes out. Especially that OC song. I saw them in concert once and all I can say is, Jason Schwartzman is lucky I still watch his movies.

I love that OC song. Ha ha. Did I know that Jason Schwartzman was in that band? If if makes you feel better, he hasn’t been a member since 2003. Not that they’ve made any new music since like 2003.

That looks tough! 4.5 at an incline of 6 ain’t easy. It’s hard for me to “just” walk on the treadmill, though I do occasionally go for “wogs”.

It’s definitely NOT easy — which is why I can only do it for a minute! I really, really hate just walking. I feel like the treadmill is mocking me.

Nice! I may have to try a modified versio of this – my short legs can’t walk that fast! But I love workouts that switch things up b/c it helps keep my mind occupied and I don’t want to hurl myself off the treadmill as much.

Modification is perfectly acceptable! Lol about hurling yourself off the treadmill. I don’t think the baby would appreciate it.

I agree about switching things up – especially when walking. It makes me want to poke my eyes out less.

[…] Warmup: 10 minutes of cardio. (I usually walk at a 4.2-4.3 at a 3.0 incline. Although when I’m feeling inspired I do my 20-minute walking workout!) […]
